In 1962 the first digger was acquired, a Dinkum Power Major and the firm branched out into Plant Hire, the following year a International Drott was added and Malcolm became the digger operator, two Whitlock 60A Diggers and further Drott with a 4 in 1 bucket was added over the next two years.
In 1967 Holt & Kelling Haulage Ltd. was sold Richard Pearl.
The plant was retained and Henry, together with his two sons then formed Wells Plant Hire trading from Brakendale Farm, Britons Lane, Sheringham expanding into Civil Engineering and Groundworks.
We are a family run business founded in 1959 when Mr. Henry George Wells the Grandfather of Scott the present Managing Director, bought a 5 ton Austin drop side lorry from a Mr. Austin Farrow of Mill Farm, Upper Sheringham and started a haulage business trading under the name of H G Wells & Sons, trading from Lower Gresham. Henry was joined by his second son Malcolm David Wells on his leaving school that year. (By coin - cidence Austin Farrow was the Grandfather of our present M Ds
wife)

Within six months this lorry was traded in for a 7 ton S type Bedford drop side, a tractor/loader was added to business for loading sugar beet, it was Malcolm’s job to drive the tractor and load the beet during the season, and generally helping with the many other loading requirements.
A year later Holt & Kelling Haulage Ltd was bought from Mr. & Mrs. Walter Cooper, the new directors being Mr. H G Wells & Mrs. R. E Wells, the company traded from a depot in Avenue Road, High Kelling, and Holt.
The fleet when taken over consisted of one 2ton Austin, four 5 ton

dodgeTipper

Ford 4Ds and one 6 ton Dodge Tipper, Over the next 5 years they were replaced with a modern fleet of 4 & 6 wheeled tippers and dropsiders all in the company livery of Sky Blue/Navy Blue cab, Navy Blue body with Red chassis and wheels. In 1961 the firm was joined by Henrys other son Anthony Henry Wells who was a qualified Blacksmith /Welder and who helped to maintain the fleet as well as later being the first Plant operator of the company. (Anthony later formed his own Plant Company Anglian Plant Hire specialising in pond creation)

In 1969 Malcolm started his own Plant Hire Company trading from 15 The Close, Aylmerton, with a Whitlock 60A given to him by Henry, he quickly traded this in for a new Whitlock 307, and his first customer was Erpingham RDC (Water Division) the contract was to trench from Kelling to Salthouse ready for them to lay a new water main. The company expanded over the next 5 years to include 2 Whitlock/Hymac 370s and a Hymac 270, returning into the haulage business by taking over the business of S. (Joe) Farrow the brother of Austin, (a repeat of history)
The firm was joined by Gavin in 1984 and Scott in 1985 when we began to undertake contract work for Anglian Water; we were busy over the next three years installing new water services before switching to laying new mains. We have remained linked to the water industry ever since, and continue working for Anglian Water and also their partners: Laing O’Rourke, Balfour Beatty, Biwater, Barhale, Dean & Dyball & Black & Veach laying new water mains, constructing water and sewerage treatment works and general repairs. The company has also undertaken Groundworks and thrust boring contracts and pipe repairs for various local firms including Bullens, Lovell, Bluestone, Morgan, Claret, Bloor Homes, Norfolk Homes, Fairstead Homes and many smaller firms.
In 2005 a limited company was formed in the name of M D Wells Services Ltd. where we added a Hyundai 140L7-7 Excavator, Terex 880 wheeled digger and a 6 tonne swivel skip dumper to the fleet, this was later increased by acquiring a 5 tonne Komatsu and a Case 2.2CK mini digger. The name of the company was changed in 2007 to Wells Services Norfolk Ltd when Malcolm’s son Scott became a director and took over the management of the company.
